Women in Mission 2023,
Happy New Year! A new church year and a new calendar year has arrived. What now? Have you made a resolution to add another daily devotion or Bible study? I am not good at keeping resolutions and have started “Read the Bible in a Year” several times so I have just about memorized Genesis! Ha! Ha! Then I let life get in the way and I begin to falter. So, I went to the LCMS website for inspiration and there it was! MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE. As a child in parochial school, we memorized everything and had competitions. I have fallen out of the practice, but believe it is necessary for our study of the Word. LCMS has developed a weekly memory verse challenge and I am encouraging everyone to participate. Be sure to commit the Bible location to memory as well. Repeat it several times, morning and evening for the week. Start with short phrases and build. It will become easier and easier.
LCMS writes, “The church confesses to Christ, “You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). The church is encouraged to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly ...” (Col. 3:16). Psalm 1 teaches us to meditate on God’s Word day and night. It is our great opportunity and joy to read and study God’s Word. One beneficial practice is to memorize the Scriptures and, in so doing, to meditate on it. The LCMS invites everyone to memorize a verse together each week.” A list for the year is found on their web site here: https://www.lcms.org/worship/memory-verse-challenge
In addition, Visual Faith Ministry’s theme for the year is the names of God - another important focus for our study of the Word. On January 5, 2023 Visual Faith Ministries held a presentation on this year’s theme - Names of God: Finding Refuge in His Name! This event was recorded and is available at https://vimeo.com/784659344.
